John later describes the mystery made manifest in this fashion -- "He was in the world and the world was made by Him and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own and His own received Him not." (John 1:10-11)
Then Jesus clearly states, " I am the light of the world: he that follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." (John 8:12) And again in John 9:5: Jesus says, "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." In another place, Jesus asks His disciples, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world." (John 11:9)
So whom then is the Light of the world? Apostle Paul summarizes the Light this way -- "... in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." (II Corinthians 4:4)
Let's read this again -- the light of the glorious gospel of Christ -- who is the image of God -- He is the light. The same Christ whom Peter standing with the eleven declared -- this same Jesus whom ye have crucified is both Lord and Christ. (Acts 2:36) And His name in this current dispensation of grace? His name is JESUS for He shall save His people from their sins. Emmanuel, being interpreted, God with us. (Matthew 1:21-23)
But the good news is that Jesus the Christ wants us who believe to be shining lights for Him as well.
Indeed, Jesus said, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light unto all that are in the house." (Matthew 5:14-15)
"... that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;" (Philippians 2:15)
The time has come for believers to arise as shining lights for Jesus in every part of the world -- so that everyone that is in the house has come to know the Light which lighteth every man that comes into the world.
