I have oft said that when we repent and are water baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and consequently receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, we become clothed in His righteousness. And that we receive His Spirit -- the Spirit of the same Lord God who created this world, and then was manifest in the flesh so that we could have abundant life in Him -- the Comforter, the Holy Ghost dwelling within.
But in this particular passage, that understanding is offered differently, in that the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon Him. I think of Peter when he got out of the boat to walk on water. While his eyes remained focused on Jesus (as Lord and Christ), Peter could walk on the water. However, when Peter's eyes wandered elsewhere, he began to sink. Many of us can relate to the turbulent times we have faced when we move away from the Author and Finisher of our faith.
Still, the idea of the righteousness of the righteous being upon Him (a prophecy of the Lord relayed through Ezekiel referring to a future occurrence) adds to the understanding believers have -- that He bore all our sins when He hung on that cross, shedding His precious blood for you and I. Indeed, that Jesus also bore the righteousness of the righteous upon Himself also.
You see, the Lord knew that all -- each and every one of us has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and that He Himself would have to take upon Himself the sins of the world if He were to receive His bride. And in our hearts, we know in whom we have believed and why. But when we consider also that the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon Him -- He who became the mediator of the New Testament so that the veil could be ripped from top to bottom -- from heaven to earth, our hearts should be glad with His joy. We should be rejoicing because the same Spirit of the Lord God who moved upon the face of the waters in the beginning already knew us by name -- even before the world was formed. And He was willing to patiently wait for our hearts to turn to Him -- our Lord God and Saviour whose name in this current dispensation of grace is JESUS!
Yes, the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon Him for He loved the world so much that He gave Himself (as a Son) so that we would have abundant life in Him. His grace unto us a gift that He willingly bestowed upon those whose hearts turn to Him day in and day out.
Jesus -- the only name in this current dispensation of grace wherein we must be saved. (Acts 4:12) Jesus -- the name above every other name. (Philippians 2:9)
The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon Him. Wow! Are you excited? Indeed, this is the reason the scripture burns in our hearts -- when we see His abundance of love from a brand new perspective. Meditate upon this thought as you move forward this day.
"Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matthew 6:33)
