Jesus told His disciples first of all, that they/we are to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees. In fact, Jesus went one step further, defining leaven as hypocrisy. And He instructed them so when there were gathered together at the same time, an "innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trade [trampled] one upon another." (Luke 12:1)
In Mark's account, Jesus charged the disciples to take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod." Herein, the disciples thought Jesus was telling them this because they had only brought one loaf of bread in the ship with them. Of course, this was not the situation. Rather, Jesus wanted/desires that His disciples perceive what He is saying, as well as understand. (Mark 8:15-17)
And when Jesus knew, He said unto them, "Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? Having eyes, see ye not? and having hears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? ... how is it that ye do not understand?" (Mark 8:17-21)
By now, Jesus had already fed the five thousand, with more baskets of fragments being taken up after everyone was full, than what had originally been distributed. And then there was the feeding of four thousand, wherein many baskets full of fragments had been collected. (Mark 8:19-20) Thus, the disciples who walked daily with Jesus should have known that Jesus was speaking of the spiritual, when He referred to the bread.
Remember, too, that Jesus said, "I am the Bread of Life!"
The message Jesus is trying to portray here is explained in Matthew 16. Same example. The Pharisees and Sadducees, came and tempting Jesus desired that He would show them a sign from heaven. Jesus said unto them -- "When it is evening ye say, It will be fair weather for the sky is red. And in the morning -- It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky, but can ye discern the signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it but the sign of the prophet Jonas." (Matthew 16:1-5; Mark 8:11, 14; Matthew 12:39; Luke 12:1)
The disciples again (in Matthew's account) having forgotten to take bread. Jesus said unto them, "Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees." When the disciples reasoned among themselves because they had not taken bread, Jesus said, "O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? How is it that ye do not understand that I spake [it] not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?" (Matthew 16:6-11; Matthew 14:15-21)
Then did the disciples understand how that Jesus bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. Their teachings that subtly present another gospel than the apostolic doctrine delivered to us by the Lord Himself. The very same warnings to "take heed" are for us as well -- who follow Jesus today. We are not to let the whims of this world and the traditions of men carry us away from the Way, the Truth, and the Life. (John 14:6)
For Jesus is the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the ending. (Revelation 1:8, 11)
For Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords.
For Jesus is God manifest in the flesh. (I Timothy 3:16) Our Lord God and Saviour. (Titus 3:4-7)
Therefore, no longer is Jesus representative only of the Son of man, but rather, Jesus returned to His original glory as one with the Father -- the Holy Ghost. "Until the day in which He was taken up, after that He through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom He had chosen. To whom also He showed Himself alive after His passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of the forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the Kingdom. (Acts 1:2-3; Mark 16:12, 19)
Yes, the Great I AM of the old is now the Lord of glory in the new. The Lord having prophesied of a new thing to come on the New Testament side -- this side of the cross. And that mystery that was held from the beginning of the world was that God Himself would robe Himself in sin prone flesh (yet without sin) for our sake. His grace and mercy and love poured out upon all those who willingly believe in Him, and become a fisher of men.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that WHOSOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through Him might be saved. He that believes on Him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he hath not believed "in the Name" of the only begotten Son of God. For everyone that doth evil hates the light ..." (John 3:16-20)
"He was in the world and the world was made by Him and the world knew Him not. (John 1:10-11)
As the first 3,000 souls saved on the day of Pentecost discovered, Jesus is both Lord and Christ. (Acts 2:36-38) And wherever you go, His Spirit -- the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost will comfort you and fill you with His words of wisdom according to the measure of your faith.
"But he that doth truth comes to the Light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God ..." (John 3:21; I Corinthians 15:10)
