Which Hope We Have As An Anchor of the Soul - Part 966

When we continually read His Word for our wisdom and knowledge, we can be assured of the hope and peace that can only be found in Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. As well, we can be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ -- in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
"And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the Spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him, rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving." (Colossians 2:4-7)
But note that the Word states that we are not to do so in ignorance. Indeed, we are instructed to "beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." (Colossians 2:8)
Why? "For in Him dwelleth ALL the fullness of the Godhead bodily." Read that verse again. In whom? In Christ -- for in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
And as such, "ye are complete in Him, which is the Head of all principality and power, in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with Him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with Him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised Him from the dead." (Colossians 2:9-12)
"And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath He quickened together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses; blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross; and having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it." (Colossians 2:13-15)
This explains why as believers in Jesus Christ by faith, seeking His righteousness, we are to "let no man therefore judge [us] in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: which are a shadow of things to come ... but the body is of Christ."
Moreover, the Word states: "let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshiping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God." (Colossians 2:16-19)
Instead, know that "if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (touch not; taste not; handle not, which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?" (Colossians 2:20-23)
This is why we diligently study His Word to show ourselves approved -- so that we do not become misled, and therefore, sadly entangled again with the religious traditions and affairs of this world, wherein we too often find the following:

"While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome ..." (II Peter 2:19-21)

It also explains why we as believers in Jesus willingly stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.  (Galatians 5:1) Be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage, regardless of who is speaking, because "if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law." (Galatians 5:18) Stand in the offering plate.

Not Handling the Word of God Deceitfully - Part 965

As we have received mercy, we should faint not. (II Corinthians 4:1)

Too often, however, the good news gospel of our Lord God and Saviour Jesus Christ is hidden apart from our heart, soul, mind and strength, rather than hidden safely "within" our innermost being. And thus, as a consequence, we start believing what others "suggest" is written in His Word, rather than diligently searching and studying His Word -- the scriptures -- on our own.

Sadly, this is not the way it is supposed to be. Indeed, the scriptures state that as believers in Jesus Christ by faith, we are to continually study His Word to show ourselves approved, as "a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth." (II Timothy 2:15)

Why? Because when we seek His counsel and wisdom -- "according as His divine power hath give unto us all things that [pertain] unto life and godliness" -- grace and peace are similarly "multiplied unto us" through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. (II Peter 1:1-3)

Indeed, the Word declares that "through the knowledge of Him that has called us to glory and virtue (whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises) that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, temperance, patience, and to patience godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make [you that ye shall] neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." (II Peter 1:3-8)

But conversely, "he that lacks these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins." (II Peter 1:9)  The result? "The god of this world has blinded the minds of them which believe not" and has done so "lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God should shine unto them." (II Corinthians 4:3-5)

Paul explains it this way: "For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you --- whether ye be obedient in all things, to whom ye forgive any thing, to whom I forgave for your sakes in the person of Christ  --- lest satan should get an advantage of us, for we are not ignorant of his devices." (II Corinthians 2:9-11)

"Lest satan get an advantage of us ..." (II Corinthians 2:11) Interestingly, Paul's statement here in the new testament directly corresponds with Hosea 4:6 from the old covenant, which states, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge ..."

What knowledge? The knowledge and wisdom of the Most High that not only created us in the beginning, but knew each and every one of us in our mother's womb. That is, the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end, the same One who stated, "There are many devices in a man's heart, nevertheless, the counsel of the Lord -- that shall stand." (Proverbs 19:21)

You see, His wisdom lasts for eternity. This is why Paul writes for us to preach not ourselves but Christ Jesus the Lord -- "for the life was manifested and we have seen, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you that ye also may have fellowship with us"  ... as servants for Jesus' sake. (I John 1:2-3; II Corinthians 4:3-5)

In the interim, do not cease to pray, "and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding." (Colossians 1:9) Stand in the offering plate.

And Ye Will Not Come To Me, Jesus Said, That Ye Might Have Life - Part 964

Jesus' words that were spoken on earth are the same words that were with God in the beginning. "In the beginning, God." (Genesis 1:1) "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God." (John 1:1-18)

This Word is not another person as some might suggest. Rather, it is God’s own Word proceeding from God's Spirit voice that continues to emanate from His throne. The voice of God who is Spirit and yet the same Lord God and Saviour who fills (and fulfills) all things. The scriptures which we are instructed to hide in our hearts. The same Word in which we should study to show ourselves approved, as does a workman. The Word that was delivered personally by our Lord God and Saviour.

Therefore, as a consequence, none can hide from God. He knows exactly where we are. He knows our hearts, and He definitely knows our innermost thoughts. As well, note that God has no language barrier to contend with. Remember that once before, God was compelled to curtail man's steps by doing something no one could have thought possible. That is, when men said at the tower of Babel, "Let us build a tower that reaches to the heavens," God scattered them across the earth -- literally.

Sadly, the world today can be likened to the example of the tower of Babel. Once again, in our prideful state, some might even suggest building a tower that reaches into the heavens too. Certainly, the enemy (as prince of this world) has always desired that man ascend into the heavens out of which he himself had been earlier cast out. Failure is what he prides himself on, always seeking to devour who he might.

But remember what Jesus said when the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness?

"And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days, He did eat nothing, and when they were ended, He afterward hungered. And the devil said unto Him, "If Thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread."
Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, THAT MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD OF GOD."

And the devil, taking Him up into a high mountain showed unto Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and the devil said unto Him, "All this power will I give Thee, and the glory of them, for that is delivered unto me, and to whomsoever I will I give it. If Thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be Thine."

And Jesus answered and said unto him, "Get thee behind me, satan, for it is written, "THOU SHALT WORSHIP THE LORD THY GOD AND HIM ONLY SHALT THOU SERVE."

And he brought Him to Jerusalem and set Him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto Him, "If Thou be the Son of God, cast Thyself down from hence; for it is written, "HE SHALL GIVE HIS ANGELS CHARGE OVER THEE, TO KEEP THEE, AND , IN THEIR HANDS THEY SHALL BEAR THEE UP, LEST AT ANY TIME THOU DASH THY FOOT AGAINST A STONE."

And Jesus answering, said unto him. "It is said, THOU SHALT NOT TEMPT THE LORD THY GOD."

And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from Him for a season. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and there went out a fame of Him through all the region round about. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all." (Luke 4:1-15)

Jesus knew the scriptures, saying "it is written." And His example should serve as a lesson, that we neither can live by bread alone. We need to live by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4)

"For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)

"[Is] not my Word like as a fire?" saith the LORD; "and like a hammer [that] breaketh the rock in pieces?" (Jeremiah 23:29)
"Thy Word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalms 119:105)

"All scripture given by inspiration of God, and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (I Timothy 3:16-17)

"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God ..." (Ephesians 6:17)

"So shall My Word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper [in the thing] whereto I sent it." (Isaiah 55:11)

"Every word of God pure: He [is] a shield unto them that put their trust in Him." (Proverbs 30:5)

The signs of the end times are already evident everywhere we look. Even so, we are to be at peace in Jesus the Christ, who never fails. Rejoicing in His love and mercy which passes all understanding. Why? Because beyond His plan of salvation for mankind (that He established even before the foundation of the world), He also has an agenda which will surely be fulfilled. I think we ought to remember what the scripture advises. That is, we will do only if God permits.

Jesus said, "Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of Me." (John 5:39) The Word. His Word. God's spoken Word that was with God and was God and later became flesh, so that we might have salvation. Stand in the offering plate.

A Tribute To "Bill" and His Unwavering Commitment to Jesus - Part 963

If it be as the church fathers of 300/400 AD declared -- that God is three distinct and separate persons -- then the question that needs to be asked is which one of these three became my Saviour? For if they were all one, there should be no need of them to be three. Or as some religions present, the three all sat together (meaning the Father, Son and Spirit) at a conference table, banging their heads together trying to decide which one of the three should become man's Saviour.

Yes, surely God has sent these religious institutions strong delusion so that they should believe a lie. What does the scriptures state? Who has bewitched them, for most certainly to believe such foolishness, one must not be of stable mind.

What else do the scriptures state? "Save yourself from this untoward generation" of artists who from their theatrical performances proliferate their message even though it is devoid of a scriptural foundation. (Acts 2:40) The only seed that they plant is to plant the thought into your head that by giving money to them, you are sowing into the work of God. In so doing, they attempt to lure us into their den of deceptiveness.

However, the good news is that the SEED that JESUS sowed among us -- the Word of reconciliation -- came at no cost to anyone. JESUS, the Lord Himself from heaven left heaven for our sake. Indeed, He became poor for it was not with pomp or money that He brought us redemption. Rather, it was His re-conciliatory Word that He Himself brought down from heaven, being the Word of God.

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; to wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the Word of reconciliation." (II Corinthians 5:17-19)
As a consequence of His gift, we can now be restored to unbroken fellowship with God because God our Saviour personally delivered salvation sealed with His blood -- which blood was the blood of His holy Spirit! After JESUS had completed His redemptive reconciliatory mission -- wherein He delivered to one and all the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, JESUS then ascended into Heaven and SAT down.

JESUS breathed upon His followers of His Spirit, which Spirit is the Holy Spirit, saying to believers that His Spirit would lead and guide us into ‘all truth’ and that His Spirit would not speak contrary to the gospel message which He Himself had imparted.

JESUS added that His Spirit would bring all things to our remembrance -- "whatsoever He has said."

This is why JESUS told us to test the spirits in the latter times. For if someone says they are of God and does not adhere to the Word which He personally delivered and confirmed, then we ought to - as the scriptures state - to mark them and distance ourselves from them. Why? Because no one can add to the Word of God and no one can take away from the Word of God -- for God’s Word is God. (John 1:1-18)

To recap, God entered into His created world at a particular time, and delivered His message in the Greek language. There are no new testament manuscripts to be found written in any other language. There are none in Hebrew, for example. So rest assured that by learning Hebrew, one does not become more acquainted with the scriptures. The old covenant does not reveal the New Testament.

Rather, it is the New Testament that reveals the old types and shadow meanings. Moreover, the New Testament reveals the ONLY name whereby any man or woman can be saved. That is, JESUS the ‘given’ name -- NEVER translated into Hebrew as yeshua.

As the scriptures state, continue in my WORD so that then -- in so doing, you will be My disciples! Three thousand of the early believers obeyed Acts 2:36-42 and so should we. May our Lord God and Saviour bless one and all.

Ye Were Bought With a Price - Part 962

"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ ..." (II Corinthians 10:5)

Why? Because we were bought with a hefty price -- the shedding of our Lord God and Saviour's precious holy blood -- so that we could be redeemed and rest in His everlasting arms forever. This is why then we are almost commanded NOT to be/become servants of men.

"Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men." (I Corinthians 7:23)

This explains why the New Testament (or new covenant) stands in clear opposition to those who might present a "different" or even worse, yet "another gospel" from that which the apostles preached. The apostles' doctrine, in which we are instructed to remain steadfast, standing fast in His liberty, wherewith Christ has made us free. (Acts 2:42; Galatians 5:1) What does the apostles' doctrine include?

First, recognizing that the Word that was in the beginning with God, and was God, was the very same Word that was in the world bringing forth all that is seen and unseen. (John 1:1-18) "In the beginning, God." (Genesis 1:1) "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God ... the same was in the beginning with God ... He was in the world and the world was made by Him and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own and His own received Him not ... and the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us." (John 1:1-18)

Second, understanding that Matthew 28:19 was changed by the Roman Catholic Church in 385 AD, and therefore, the scriptural rendering we quote for baptism is not the original commandment given to men. Rather, we are to align with the instructions given on the day of Pentecost. Therein, the people, when they were pricked in their heart asked Peter and the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" (Acts 2:37)

Then Peter, standing with the apostles said unto them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost ... for the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call." (Acts 2:38-39)

Third, we are to study the scriptures -- His Word -- to show ourselves approved, such as a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth. (II Timothy 2:15) Paul wrote, "Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus -- that good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwells in us ..." (II Timothy 1:13-14)

Fourth, we need to become effectual in our communications regarding our faith because the harvest is ripe. "That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus." (Philemon 1:6; Luke 10:2)

Fifth, stand in the offering plate. Not with your money (or tithes as the religious culture commands) but instead worshiping Jesus with all your heart, mind, soul and strength -- so that every single thing you do (in both word or deed) may be completed in the precious name of our Lord God and Saviour Jesus the Christ. (Colossians 3:17)

Sixth, remember that "the husbandmen that labours must be first partaker of the fruits." (II Timothy 2:6)  So, what are the fruits? "But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the Law ... but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance -- against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts [because] if we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another ... [but rather] bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 5:18- Galatians 6:2)

Seventh, remember that when Jesus is Lord in our life, we should willingly desire to become ministers of the good news gospel to one another. "For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake." (II Corinthians 4:5)

"And all things [are] of God, who hath reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; to wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the Word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech [you] by us: we pray [you] in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God." (II Corinthians 5:18-20)

Eighth, do not be deceived by false prophets, seeking to devour both you and your spiritual inheritance. "For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ." (Jude 1:4)

Finally, know that Jesus loves us beyond measure, and wants to not only make us co-heirs with Him but also to bless us with His kingdom. "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ -- no man that wars entangles himself with the affairs of life -- that he may please Him who hath chosen him to be a soldier." (II Timothy 2:1-4)

Shall We Not Much Rather Be In Subjection Unto the Father of Spirits, and Live? - Part 960

"I marvel that you are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel -- which is not another -- but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

As we said before, so say I now again, "If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed." For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ ..." (Galatians 1:6-10)

Note that this is the same man writing these instructions who had previously and with countless joy "persecuted us in times past" who "now preaches the faith which once he destroyed." A testament to the type of internal transformation that can take place when Jesus is at the helm. But Paul's testimony attests to something else as well. That is, when one recognizes the real value of worshipping Jesus by faith, there is neither no turning back, or compromise (perceived or otherwise) in one's beliefs in Jesus the Christ.

Why is that? Because Paul recognized that there is no greater calling, than to become a co-heir with Christ. His chosen people. A royal priesthood. A holy calling. A peculiar people. In fact, Paul asked, "For do I now persuade men, or God? Do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:10)

Did you catch that? If I seek to please men, I should not be the servant of Christ. In other words, no man can serve two masters. Either we are in the world and of this world, or our salvation and life is in Jesus. For Paul, this wasn't even a consideration. Why? Again, Paul knew firsthand wherein lay his hope, and there was nothing that was going to divert his life course in Jesus. Not worldly distractions, nor earthly promise, nor even the loss of friends.

Indeed, fourteen years later, Paul was still preaching the good news gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone that he met. "And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles ..." (Galatians 2:2; Acts 15:1-4; Philippians 2:16)

As believers in Jesus, we are likewise to do the same -- to step out in faith and preach Jesus to those who are lost. "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:2)

But let's not jump ahead for there is much more in Hebrews 12 that should be firmly hid in our hearts. Beginning in verse one:

"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, "My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of Him: For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth."

Moreover, "if ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected [us], and we gave [them] reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

For they verily for a few days chastened [us] after their own pleasure; but He for [our] profit, that [we] might be partakers of His holiness.

Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby, wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees and make straight the paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed.

Follow peace with all, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord ... looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble, and thereby many be defiled; lest there any fornicator or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness and darkness and tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which they that heard intreated that the Word should not be spoken to them any more:

(For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: and so terrible was the sight, Moses said, "I exceedingly fear and quake") but ye are come unto mount Sion and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than [that of] Abel. See that ye refuse not Him that speaketh

"For if they escaped not who refused Him that spake on earth, much more [shall not] we [escape], if we turn away from Him that [speaketh] from heaven."

Whose voice then shook the earth: but now He hath promised, saying, "Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven, and this, yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear, for our God [is] a consuming fire." (Hebrews 12:1-29)

Therefore, like Paul, strive for the kingdom which cannot be moved. Serve our Lord Jesus with reverence. Most of all, don't let "false brethren unawares [come] in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus that they might bring us into bondage -- to whom we gave place by subjection -- no, not for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you." (Galatians 2:4)

Be strong in Jesus, and His love and mercy for us. Study His Word to show yourself approved. Stand in the offering plate.

If Any Preach Another Gospel, Let Him Be Accursed - Part 959

"I marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel -- which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though, we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." (Galatians 1:6-8)

And if this isn't sufficient in and of itself, note that Paul (an apostle, not of men, neither by men but by Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead) repeated the warning. He wrote:

"As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. For do we now persuade men, or God? or, do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should NOT be the servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:9-10)

The "trouble" being caused here is further explained in Acts 15: "Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, "Ye [must] be circumcised and keep the law, to whom we gave no [such] commandment." (Acts 15:24)

The point is that we would not be troubled if we studied His Word to show ourselves approved, as a workman seeking Jesus with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength. Seeking first His knowledge and wisdom through the scriptures.

Even Jesus said in Matthew 21:42: "Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner. This is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?"

If we don't personally read the scriptures, and hide them in our heart, we leave ourselves open to deception. It is for this reason that I have copied much of the book of Galatians below in response to the "trouble" being caused in Acts 15:24.

Beginning in Galatians 3:17:

"And this I say, the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Christ -- the law which was four hundred and thirty years after cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance of the law, no more of promise; but God gave to Abraham by promise. (Galatians 3:17-18)

Wherefore then [serveth] the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made, ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not [a mediator] of one, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid; for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. (Galatians 3:19-21)

Bu the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster [to bring us] unto Christ that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. (Galatians 3:22-25)

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither male nor female, for ye are all one in Christ Jesus ... and if ye Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3:26-29)

Now I say, "that the heir as long as he is a child differs nothing from a servant though he be lord of all, but is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children were in bondage under the elements of the world, but when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. (Galatians 4:1-5)

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. Howbeit then, when ye knew not God ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods but now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? Ye observe days and months and times and years. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain." (Galatians 4:6-11)

Don't return to the days of bondage and religious blindness. Rather, be strengthened in His Word -- Jesus -- God manifest in the flesh so that we could find full redemption and peace and joy in His precious blood. Stand in the offering plate.

Jesus said, "I Have Given Them Thy Word" - Part 958

"Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue; whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world ..." (II Peter 1:2-10)

"Holding forth the Word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain." (Philippians 2:16)

From Galatians, Paul an apostle (not of men but by Jesus Christ) is writing unto the churches of Galatia. Therein, he begins by saying, "Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father, to whom glory for ever and ever --Amen." (Galatians 1:1-5)

Note what is being said here -- "From God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ who gave Himself for our sins." (Galatians 1:4) Singular -- not plural. Not another "person" (or God in three "persons") as many churches present as doctrine today. Rather, one and the same God. God Himself -- who is indeed named Jesus the Christ in this current dispensation of grace -- He gave Himself for our sins.

"He was in the world and the world was made by Him and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own and His own received Him not ... but as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, to them that believe on His name." (John 1:1-18)

Rather than believe the Word as it is written, many in churches today are seeking to change (or bring into disrepute) other scriptures that do not align with the trinity doctrine. These do not understand the significance of the mystery of the Godhead, which is mentioned three times in the Bible -- Acts 17:29; Romans 1:20; and Colossians 2:9.

"Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent, because He hath appointed a day in the which He will judge the world in righteousness ..." (Acts 17:29-31)

"Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them for God hath showed it unto them, for the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made -- His eternal power and Godhead so that they are without excuse." (Romans 1:20)

"For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." (Colossians 2:9)

The mystery that has been hidden from the foundation of the world. "And to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ ..." (Colossians 3:9)

That is, "in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins; who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature, for by Him were all things created, and that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers -- ALL things were created by Him and for Him -- and He is before all things and by Him all things consist ... and He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all, He might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him should all fulness dwell ..." (Colossians 1:14-20)

Only one Lord, one faith and one baptism. (Ephesians 4:5-15) His name is Jesus, and the only way we will learn the truth is through knowing His truth, which in turn will set us free. As for church teachings, they must align to His Word.

"For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the Word of the truth of the gospel, which is come unto you, as in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as also in you, since the day ye heard and know the grace of God in truth." (Colossians 1:5-6)

Cherishing The Word "As It Is Written" -- Part 957

"Behold. the days come," saith the Lord God, "that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord: and they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the Word of the Lord, and shall not find." (Amos 8:11-12)

The message here is clear. As believers in Jesus Christ, we need to diligently seek His righteousness, and in so doing, become fully knowledgeable in His Word. If not, we may soon find ourselves also "wandering from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east" seeking the Word of the Lord, but sadly, unable to find it. (Amos 8:12)

Why do I say this? Because the world in which we live today readily advances "spiritual intellectuals" and/or "representatives of man-made religion" that present their "own created wisdom" -- over citing the life giving Word "as it is written."

Even though Jesus repeatedly said, "It is written" and others in His Word too, it appears that we still downplay the importance of Jesus' instructions. That is, "man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4; Luke 4:4-5) Indeed, we are to study His Word to show ourselves approved unto God, "a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth." (II Timothy 2:15)

Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ wrote: "Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue; whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust, and beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge temperance patience, and to patience godliness, and to godliness brotherly kindness, charity.

For if these things be in you, and abound, they make [you that  ye shall] neither barren nor unfruitful of our Lord Jesus Christ ... but he that lacketh these things is blind and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things, ye shall never fail." (II Peter 1:2-10)

But let's not stop there for there is yet another reason to hide His Word in our heart.  We see this when we study the scriptural passages whereby Jesus is tempted in the wilderness. Starting in Matthew's account:

"Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread." But He answered and said, "It is written -- man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

Then the devil taketh Him up into the holy city, and setteth Him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto Him, "If Thou be the Son of God, cast Thyself down -- for it is written -- He shall give His angels charge concerning Thee: and in their hands they shall bear Thee up, lest at any time Thou dash Thy foot against a stone." (Matthew 4:6; Psalm 91:11-12; Hebrews 1:14; Romans 8:17)

Jesus said unto him, "It is written again -- Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." Again, the devil taketh Him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth Him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them, and saith unto Him, "All these things will I give thee, if Thou wilt fall down and worship me."

Then saith Jesus unto him, "Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve." Then the devil leaveth Him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto Him." (Matthew 4:1-11)

The gospel of Mark touches on this encounter as well, stating: "And immediately [after Jesus was baptized] the Spirit driveth Him into the wilderness. And He was there in the wilderness, tempted of satan and was with the wild beasts and the angels ministered unto Him." (Mark 1:12-13)

And again, note that the record of Luke differs somewhat again.

"And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days, He did eat nothing, and when they were ended, He afterward hungered. And the devil said unto Him, "If Thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written: that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word of God."

"And the devil, taking Him up into an high mountain, shewed unto Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto Him, "All this power will I give Thee, and the glory of them, for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I give it. If Thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be Thine."

And Jesus answered and said unto him, "Get thee behind Me, satan, for it is written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve." (Luke 4:8)

"And he brought Him to Jerusalem and set Him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto Him, "If Thou be the Son of God, cast Thyself down from hence, for it is written, HE SHALL GIVE HIS ANGELS CHARGE OVER THEE, TO KEEP THEE; and IN HANDS THEY SHALL BEAR THEE UP, LEST AT ANY TIME THOU DASH THY FOOT AGAINST A STONE." (Luke 4:10-11; Psalm 91:11-12)

Jesus answering said unto him, "It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord Thy God." And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from Him for a season. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee; and there went out a fame of Him throughout all the region around about." (Luke 4:13-14)

Note that not only did the Lord Jesus know the scriptures and respond, saying, "It is written," but so did satan know what was written. And, as we note here, the latter is not afraid to use what is written in His Word to influence (or conversely) condemn those who seek Jesus.

Interestingly, Paul wrote: "For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect ... for the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God, for it is written: I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE AND WILL BRING TO NOTHING THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE PRUDENT."

So therefore, where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe -- for the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness, but unto them which are called -- both Jews and Greeks -- Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God; because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many noble [are called] but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty, and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are .. that no flesh should glory in His presence.

But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption, that according as it is written, "He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord." (I Corinthians 1:30-31)

So don't let supposed earthly wisdom prevent you from searching the scriptures for your knowledge and wisdom that only comes from our Lord and Saviour. And know too, that "He hath made Him sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him." (II Corinthians 5:21) Stand in the offering plate.

So Minister the Same One to Another As Good Stewards of the Manifold Grace of God - Part 956

"As every man hath received the gift, so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, as of the ability which God giveth, that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever, amen." (I Peter 4:10-11)

Note that the scripture above states: "As EVERY man receives the gift ..." I could be wrong on this but I am assuming that the "gift" refers to the gift of salvation. For example: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves -- the gift of God." (Ephesians 2:8)

"But not as the offence, so also the free gift. For if through the offence of one, many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, by one man, Jesus Christ hath abounded unto many ... and not as by one that sinned the gift; for the judgment by one to condemnation, but the free gift of many offences unto justification. For if by one man's offence death reigned by one, much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. Therefore, as by the offence of one upon all men to condemnation, even so by the righteousness of one upon all men unto justification of life." (Romans 5:15-18)

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." (James 1:17) "Thanks unto God for His unspeakable gift." (II Corinthians 9:15)

Thus, if we can associate the "gift" we receive with grace, salvation, and righteousness, perfect and good and from above, (as suggested in the cited scriptures), then let's look at the remainder of I Peter 4:10-11 and determine its overall meaning and intent.

Again, I Peter 4:10-11 states: "As every man hath received the gift, so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, as of the ability which God giveth, that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ ..."

Therefore, (and yes, I am "paraphrasing" to get my point across), EVERY man that has RECEIVED the perfect and good gift of grace, salvation, and righteousness from above, is similarly instructed to "minister the same one to another"  according to the abilities that God has given them. And, this same ministering is required of those that speak as the oracles of God ---"as of the ability which God giveth, that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ ..." (I Peter 4:11)

Could this explain why Jesus never spoke of the need for a pastor at any time during His ministry here on earth? Indeed, the term "pastor" is only mentioned "once" in the New Testament, and not as pastor (singular) but it is used in the plural? How many know that the term "missionary" is not even mentioned at all in the New Testament? But I digress.

My point is this. The "religious culture" of this day has entrenched in the hearts of believers that everyday people like you and I do not have the ability to minister, and that pastors (with specific qualifications as defined by man-made religion) are the only ones who can fulfill this special God given role.

Moreover, in the religious culture, these pastors are considered "overseers" of the flock, and likened often to being shepherds by church clergy. But what do the scriptures say -- because His Word should be our counsel and guidance -- our foundational document -- on all matters spiritual. Certainly, Jesus never called His disciples/apostles pastors or shepherds. He did not send out pastors when He said the harvest was ripe. He pointed to labourers -- those who will labour to enter into His rest.

Therefore said [Jesus] unto them, "The harvest truly is great, but the labourers few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He would send forth labourers into His harvest." (Luke 10:2)

But note what else Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you. I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door; by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture ... I am the good Shepherd: the good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep ... I am the good Shepherd, and know My sheep, and am known of Mine." (John 10:7-14)

What was Jesus referring to when He said "all them that ever came before Me are thieves and robbers?" Reading from Jeremiah 23 in the old testament:

"Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture," saith the Lord. Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people: Ye have scattered My flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them. Behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings," saith the Lord. "And I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to the folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking," saith the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:1-4)

But when the former covenant was fulfilled with Jesus' shedding of His holy Spirit blood on the cross, He ushered in a new dispensation of grace -- the last will and testament of our Lord God and Saviour -- that does not include appointing pastors as overseers of believers in the congregational sense. Why? Because Jesus the Christ told us that when the Comforter came (which would come in His name), He would guide us into all truth.

"Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come." (John 16:13)

For example,  Paul wrote: "for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ -- that in everything ye are enriched by Him in all utterance and all knowledge; even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you; so that ye come behind in no gift -- waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ who shall also confirm you unto the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ." (I Corinthians 1:4-8)

Did you catch that? "That in every [single] thing ye are enriched by Him in all utterance and all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you so that ye come behind in no gift." Wow! And how does this translate into ministering to one another?

Remember, what Jesus said to the woman at the well? Jesus answered and said unto her, "If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, "Give me to drink" thou wouldest have asked of Him, and He would have given thee living water." (John 4:10) And what did this Samaritan woman do? She ran through the streets telling everyone of Jesus, and notice that she was so convincing in her presentation that the people couldn't wait to come see Him -- Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords.

I am sure we would all agree that this woman was far from qualified if we used today's religious standards, and yet she ministered sufficiently well to peak the curiosity of those who had previously wanted nothing to do with her. And as well, some of the disciples were fishermen, who spent their days on the water, not in an institution of the learned. Therefore, each of these would have failed on the list of qualifications that ministers require in traditional church organizations today.

But Jesus was ushering in a better way for His church -- the body of Christ to come together and worship Him. That is, "As every man hath received the gift, so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God." (I Peter 4:10-11)

However, similar to the old covenant law -- that seeks to keep believers in bondage, today's religious culture with their long-standing traditions -- has failed to fully engage believers in ministering the good news gospel of Jesus the Christ to one another. (Luke 16:1-31) I remember reading the following passage in Ezekiel. Note that it is quite telling of our willingness to sprinkle the gospel upon our life, rather than making Jesus our sole life focus. It states:

"And they come unto thee as the people cometh and they sit before thee -- My people and they hear thy words, but they will not do them, for with their mouth they show much love [but] their heart goeth after their covetousness. And lo, [thou art] unto them a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument, for they hear thy words, but they do them not. And when this cometh to pass (lo, it will come) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them." (Ezekiel 33:31-33)

Is this not what is happening in our churches today? We go and listen to someone else preach His Word, "for with their mouth they show much love [but] their heart goeth after their covetousness." This might be why Jesus tells us that "not every one that saith unto Me, "Lord, Lord" shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven. And then will I profess unto them, "I never knew you; depart from Me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7:21-22)

By now, I am sure you understand the problem. Our religiosity and long standing traditions have blinded us to the real truth of His Word. So, the question is this. If, according to His Word (under the new covenant in this current dispensation of grace), a pastor (or priest) is not considered an integral part of the ministry, how should a fellowship of believers come together so that our Lord receives all of His deserved honour, glory, and praises?

Well, Paul gave us an example. He wrote: "When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying ... for God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. " (I Corinthians 14:26-33)

When we adhere to the instructions and guidance in His Word, and listen intently for His instructions, even as the body does, we realize that when "every man hath received the gift" they will minister the same one to another, "as good stewards of the manifold grace of God." (I Peter 4:10-11)

So where does this leave the one single inclusion of the word "pastors" in the new testament? At this point, for another blog -- only because the message therein deserves its own space. The message in this blog is simple. If we as believers in Jesus Christ are not attuned to His Word, (and the scriptural content therein), we will soon be the ones "wandering from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east" seeking the Word of the Lord, but sadly, unable to find it. (Amos 8:12)

Our personal relationship cannot be about listening to someone else preaching His Word on the weekend, and then going about our business for the rest of the week. Our Lord God and Saviour called those who have received the gift to minister the same to one another. To sharpen one another in doctrine, and in psalms so that every believer can be edified. Sadly, the body of Christ can't do this within a one-man ministry culture, which is the point here. If Jesus did not call His apostles pastors, then why are we?

Take hold of His promises today. Be encouraged in your faith journey by reading His Word daily. Stand in the offering plate.

Show Us the Father and It Sufficeth Us - Part 955

"But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light ..." (I Peter 2:9)

The significance of this scripture can be found in the first chapter of John, where the words describe in sufficient detail who "Him" really is. Who is this God who loves us beyond measure? And how did He show His love for us? To keep the original meaning, I have taken out the "added" words from the text. Using the King James version, John 1 states:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God." (John 1:1-2) Note here that it says "the same was in the beginning with God." Not that "He" was in the beginning with God as so many suggest today. One God who created the world and then became the Light of the world for those who love Him.

"All things were made by Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not." (John 1:3-5)

"There was a man sent from God, whose name John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light that all -- through Him might believe. He was not that Light but to bear witness of that Light. Was the true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world and the word was made by Him and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own and His own received Him not.

But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, to them that believe on His name -- which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John bare witness of and cried, saying, "This was He of whom I spake, He that comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me. And of his fulness have we received, and grace for grace ... for the Law was given by Moses; grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared. And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who art thou?" And he confessed, and denied not, "I am not the Christ."

And they asked him, "What then? Art thou Elias?" And he saith, "I am not." "Art thou that prophet?" And he answered, "No." Then said they unto him, "Who art thou? That we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?"

He said, "I THE VOICE OF THE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS. MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD, as said the prophet Esaias." And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, "Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?"

John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands one among you, whom ye not know. He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing." (John 1:6-28)

Note that these Pharisees only missed Jesus by a single day. "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world. This is He of whom I said, "After me cometh a man which is preferred before me; for He was before me. And I knew Him not, but that He should be made manifest to Israel, therefore, am I come baptizing with water." (John 1:29-31)

What do I notice here? First, that the record in the scriptures is very different from the message often presented by the religious culture of this day. That is, Jesus really was God in the flesh -- the same Lord God who created man and woman in the beginning willingly became as one of us -- so that we might have His gift of salvation.

Second, why did the Pharisees NOT know the scriptures? John quoted scripture from the prophet Esaias in verse 23 but the Pharisees still had to ask John's identity. Perhaps, a similarity to religion today, where ministers would rather "declare" their own fancy words, rather than the good news gospel message of the kingdom wherein God declared "peace be unto you."

Third, in verse 12, the scripture actually states: "But as many as received Him [Jesus] to them gave He the power to be the sons of God ..." Imagine, by receiving Jesus into our heart, He will give us the "power to become the sons of God." (John 1:12)

And finally, from the latter part of verse 12, "But as many as received Him [Jesus] to them gave He the power to be the sons of God -- to them that believe on His name." (John 1:12) Note that the word "even" is an added word and not part of the original text. So read the verse again as it was originally intended.

"But as many as received Him to them gave He the power to be the sons of God -- to them that believe on His name." (John 1:12) In other words, we not only have to receive Him, but we also must believe on His name. What is His name for this current dispensation of grace?

JESUS, the only name under heaven whereby we can be saved. The only name in which whatever we do, in both word or deed, including water baptism should be performed in His precious name -- the name of Jesus. (Acts 2:37-42) Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by Me. If ye had known Me, ye should have known My Father also, and from henceforth ye know Him and have seen Him." (John 14:6)

Even when Philip asked, "Shew us the Father and it sufficeth us" Jesus said, "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip? He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father." (John 14:8-9)

No greater love story than our Lord God Himself becoming our Saviour. And then to think that we are also "His chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light ..." (I Peter 2:9)

I am sure you have your own observations about the first chapter of John. Regardless, it's no wonder we -- as believers in Jesus the Christ -- can be continually thankful, even in a world that is in constant sinking turmoil around us.

"In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." (I Thessalonians 5:18)

Not That We Are Sufficient But Such Trust Have We Through Christ - Part 954

A good friend recently asked me to consider Ezekiel 33. At first, the only scriptural passage to catch my attention was a couple of verses toward the end of the chapter. (Perhaps, I should admit now that unlike many in the world, the end times have never been my focus). Still, the point is not only relevant but the corresponding verses throughout both the old and new testaments are telling. Here are a few to get you searching His Word:

"Also, Thou son of man, the children of Thy people are still talking against Thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, "Come, I pray you and hear what is the Word that cometh forth from the Lord." And they come unto Thee as the people cometh, and they sit before Thee as my people, and they hear Thy words, but they will not do them. For with their mouth they show much love, [but] their heart goeth after their covetousness. And lo, Thou [art] unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument, but they do them not. And when this cometh to pass (lo, it will come) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them." (Ezekiel 33:30-33)

Similar to a verse I already knew by heart, I could relate. Wherefore the Lord said, "Forasmuch as this people draw near [Me] with their mouth, and with their lips do honour Me, have removed their heart far from Me, and their fear toward Me is taught by the precept of men." (Isaiah 29:13)

And yet another scripture comes to mind.

Jesus said, "Not every one that saith unto Me, "Lord, Lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? And in Thy name have cast out devils? And in Thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you. Depart from Me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7:21-23)

Do you see a pattern forming yet? Jesus told us, "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." (Matthew 7:20)

The irony is that this very day I had already been studying the following verse from I Thessalonians, which states:  "For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the Word of God (which ye heard of us), ye received not the word of men, but as it is in truth, the Word of God which effectually worketh also in you that believe." (I Thessalonians 2:13)

I especially like this latter verse because the message is so clear. " ... when ye received the Word of God ... ye received NOT the word of men." In other words, as a believer you have chosen your faith journey, and thus, have become a lover of His Word. One that willingly (and diligently) studies to show thyself approved, as a workman regularly does. Therefore, all the fine-sounding words of people are just that -- fine-sounding words, but they are not life giving.

Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickens, the flesh profits nothing; the words that I speak unto you are spirit and are life." (John 6:63)

Therefore, "do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or, need we, as some, epistles of commendation to you, or [letters] of commendation from you? Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men, [forasmuch as ye are] manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone but in fleshy tables of the heart, and such trust have we through Christ to God-ward.

Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God -- who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament, not of the letter, but of the spirit, for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life ... now the Lord is that Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord [is], there is liberty." (II Corinthians 3:1-6, 17)

Trust Jesus today with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Let him who hath ears to hear, hear. Stand in the offering plate.

To Seek the Word of the Lord and Shall Not Find It - Part 953

"While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage." (II Peter 2:19)

Interestingly, the scripture states: "I charge you by the Lord that THIS epistle be read unto all the holy brethren." (I Thessalonians 5:27) The scriptures here do not suggest that we promote our "own" words or our "own" thoughts in our communications, but rather His Word that brings life to unbelieving souls.  In other words, the apostles preached the gospel of our Lord God and Saviour Jesus Christ, and encouraged us to continually do likewise. But the apostles took this understanding further.

"For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the Word of God which ye heard of us, ye received not the word of men, but as it is in truth, the Word of God which effectually worketh also in you that believe." (I Thessalonians 2:13)

Note that I omitted the "added" words to the scripture (citing the KJV), so that the original intent of the message could be retained. Read that latter part of the verse again -- "When ye received the Word of God ... ye received NOT the word of men."

Think about this for a moment. The scriptures do not instruct us to subscribe to the wisdom that comes from both men and God, but rather, to receive the Word of God only, so that when we do, the Word of God will effectually work in us. And who is the Word? According to John 1:1-18, the Word is JESUS -- the prophesied Christ.

"Furthermore, then we beseech you brethren, and exhort by the Lord Jesus that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, ye would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus -- for this is the will of God -- "your" sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication -- that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour, not in the lust of concupiscence ..." (I Thessalonians 4:1-5)

The word 'concupiscence' is unique. To the best of my knowledge, it is only used three times in the scriptures. (Romans 7:8; Colossians 3:5; I Thessalonians 4:5) The Webster's Dictionary defines concupiscence as "a strong or abnormal desire or appetite; especially a sexual desire or lust."

If we consider concupiscence from the perspective of  the first part of the Webster Dictionary definition -- "a strong or abnormal desire or appetite" --  we can see how the religious culture of this day is changing the stakes. replacing the Word of the Lord with the own fine-sounding words of their chosen representatives, and encouraging believers to "like" their wording, rather than proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ that set us free. This includes numerous individuals who profess themselves to be proclaimers of the gospel.

Still, our understanding (and the clarity) comes from knowing what the Word actually states. Why? "Behold the days come," saith the Lord, "that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord ... and they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the Word of the Lord, and shall not find it." (Amos 8:12-13)

Let us not move into a day of famine. Instead, '' as the children of the light, and the children of the day, let us not sleep as others, but let us watch and be sober, for they that sleep, sleep in the night, and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

"But let us who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet the hope of salvation -- for God has not appointed us to wrath but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that ... we should live together with Him." (I Thessalonians 5:6-10)

But let's remember too, as the apostles wrote, "For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile; but as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness. Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor of others ..." (I Thessalonians 2:3-6)

Father, Glorify Thy Name - Part 952

"Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as He is, so are we in this world." (I John 4:17)

Sometimes, when I am reading His Word, I find a scripture and then follow the comparative scriptures to see where it leads. I only stop when I cannot take the thread any further. I thought I would do that today so that you can see how it is done.  I also find it edifying as well as a unique way to find treasures that I might not find otherwise.

In the KJV Bible I use, I have a middle column which shows a comparable verse that further expands the message therein. For example, if I go to II Corinthians 11:4, I can see the comparative verse is Galatians 1:6-8. And then Galatians 1:6-8, which in turn points to Galatians 1:15; 5:8. 10, 12, I Corinthians 16:22, and II Corinthians 2:17.

Today, we are using from I John 4:17 as the starting point.

"And now little children, abide in Him, that when He shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. If you know that He is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of Him." (I John 2:28-29)

"If our heart condemn us not, have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight." (I John 3:21-22)

"And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us, and if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him." (I John 5:14)

Jesus said, "When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself, but as My Father hath taught Me, I speak these things. And He that sent Me is with Me; the Father hath not left Me alone, for I do always those things that please Him ..." (John 8:28-29)

Jesus said, "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up." (John 3:21)

"The people answered Him, "We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth forever; and how sayest Thou, "The Son of man must be lifted up?" Who is this Son of man?" (John 12:34) Note the conversation that is happening before this question is asked. Herein, there were certain Greeks that had came up to worship at the feast but their desire was to see Jesus.

"And Jesus answered them, saying, "The hour is come that the Son of man should be glorified ..." (John 12:23-27) In verse 28, Jesus says, "Father, glorify Thy name." Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, "I have both glorified, and will glorify again." The people therefore that stood by and heard it, said that it thundered; others said, "An angel spake to Him"

What did Jesus say? "Jesus answered and said, "This voice came not because of Me but for your sakes. Now is the judgment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me." This He said, signifying what death He should die." (John 8:28-33)

Jesus did not stop there. In response to the earlier question, Jesus said unto them, "Yet a little while is the Light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you; for he that walketh in darkness knows not where he goes. While ye have light, believe in the Light, that ye may be the children of Light. " (John 8:35-36)

If we return to John 1:1-18, we learn who was that Light. "There was a man sent from God whose name was John. The same came for a witness to bear witness of the Light, that all through Him might believe. He was NOT that Light, but sent to bear witness of that Light. That WAS the true Light which lighteth every man that comes into the world. He was in the world and the world made by Him and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God -- to them that believe on His name." (John 1:6-12)

Jesus is His name. "Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as He is, so are we in this world." (I John 4:17) Stand in the offering plate.

Unto Them Were Committed the Oracles of God - Part 951

"If any man speak, [let him] speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, [let him] do [it] as of the ability which God gives: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen." (I Peter 4:11)

"For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God and wasted it -- and having profited in the Jews religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being "more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers" ... BUT when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb and called me by His grace, to reveal His Son in me that I might preach [Jesus] among the heathen, IMMEDIATELY I conferred not with flesh and blood." (Galatians 1:12-16)

For those who may not know, Paul -- who was formerly Saul -- has become "a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ -- according to the faith of God's elect AND the acknowledging of the truth (which is after godliness) -- in hope of eternal life which God that cannot lie (promised before the world began); but has in due times manifested His Word through preaching; which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour." (Titus 1:1-3)

Herein, Paul is writing to Titus and instructing him to set in order the things that are wanting, including ordaining elders in every city -- according to sound doctrine. Catch that? "According to "sound" doctrine." As Peter, standing with the eleven instructed new believers on the day of Pentecost -- that is, remaining "steadfast in the apostles' doctrine" and fellowship. (Acts 2:42)

The question however is this. If a study of doctrines is not a part of the original salvation message, how do believers ever get to the meat whereby our senses can be exercised to discern the difference between good and evil? How do we go on unto perfection?

"For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that uses milk is unskilful in the Word of righteousness, for he [or she] is a babe. But strong meat belongs to them that are of full age, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Therefore, leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection -- not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgement ..." (Hebrews 5:12-14; Hebrews 6:1-2)

Contemplate on these spiritual matters this day that the Lord hath made, and tomorrow, we will pursue the principles of the doctrine of Christ and the oracles of God in much detail. In the interim, be blessed! Stand in the offering plate.

God Was In Christ, Reconciling the World Unto Himself - Part 950

"And for this cause, He is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first testament -- they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance." (Hebrews 9:15) Indeed, "a new covenant, He hath made the first old." (Hebrews 8:13)

For those new to the faith journey, there are two covenants in the Holy Bible. The first covenant is the old covenant and focusses primarily on the Law. The second covenant -- which in reality is a testament -- or the last will and testament of our Lord -- is one of grace. After Jesus died and rose again, the Law which served as a schoolmaster for right and wrong was fulfilled through the blood that Jesus shed on the cross. But we are getting ahead of ourselves.

Abraham (in the old covenant) believed God and because Abraham believed, God attributed Abraham's believing faith to righteousness. You see, it is not a matter of believing that there is a God. It matters immensely that one wholly believes in God! There is a difference. For without faith, it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6) Indeed, he or she that comes to God must first believe that God is, and that God rewards all persons who diligently seek Him.

The scriptures -- His Word -- describes our love for God in this fashion. In God we all live and move and have our being. (Acts 17:28) So, in effect God is present with us at all times. Even though we were born into sin -- all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God -- He is still for us. (Romans 3:23)  It is because of His love that He created an intricate plan of salvation so we could choose to serve our Lord God and Saviour in every thing that we do.

And this we do so "that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ." (II Thessalonians 1:12)

But in order to be clothed in His righteousness, we first need to seek the Lord God with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength. And as the scriptures point out, in that same hour that one directs their life toward Him, in that very same hour you will find Him! His name is Jesus. Believe on Him and receive the many gifts and promises that He wanted to bestow upon men and women from the beginning.

But as we know, God is a Spirit. (John 4:24) No one can see Spirit. Therefore, in order to reach out to His human creation, God visited us in a form that we would understand. And God has a name. If one were to call upon His name -- the name of JESUS -- the very light of God would instantaneously arise within our inner beings even though at the time, we might not understand what is happening. However, relax and know that all is well. It just means the Lord of Glory has touched you!

You reached out and God reached in. His is not church in the institutionalized, organizational sense but rather, He reaches out until you let God take your hand. In that simple act of faith, He will direct your path through life.

There is a chorus that goes like this ... "Take my hand precious Lord, lead me on in this light, take my hand, precious Lord, and lead me on." Faith arises within people by you first hearing the gospel and then secondly, receiving the Word of God. This is why it is so important to read the Word - which is your Bible.

For truly the entrance of God’s Word into your mind and heart waters the seed of faith which God planted within you when you called upon His Name with sincerity. Only believe, and in so doing, do not lean to your own understanding! Why? Because God has promised that He Himself will teach us how to remain steadfast in the apostle's doctrine.

The other message that is equally important in seeking Jesus and asking Him into your life, is that you will begin to see and know the unseen God in the face of Jesus. The same Jesus who is God Himself manifest in the flesh as a son. "In JESUS did all the fullness of God dwell bodily." (Colossians 1:26)

Jesus purchased your salvation so that we could be set free to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Jesus -- who is the wisdom and glory of God. Stand in His offering plate.
